Concrete Curbing in Eugene, Oregon
There are many different shapes and sizes for curbing, but they all fall into two general categories: poured curb and extruded curb. Poured curb uses a traditional concrete mix (or “mud”) and is installed using concrete forms. Extruded curbing is placed with a machine with a variable sized “mold” and has a much drier, almost sandy, concrete mix. Each has its useful purpose.
This type of curb can take the shape of curb and gutter, rolled curb, vertical curb or others, and is placed before a subsequent adjacent pavement, such as an asphalt road or parking lot.
Extruded curb is placed on top of an existing pavement and is usually seen in parking lots around the periphery and landscape islands.

What kind of cement mix is used for extruded curbing? How is this different from other cements?
Extruded curbing is placed using a unique mix which is drier than other concrete mixes. It will cure faster and the finishing process can be completed sooner.
How is extruded curb placed?
Extruded curbing is placed using a curbing machine and then finished by hand.
How much does it cost?
Factors that affect the cost of an extruded curbing job are:
- Amount of removal/excavation to complete
- Total lineal feet to place
- Total number of locations and
- Mold/uniqueness of the mold/shape.
Does curbing require a sub-base?
Yes, extruded curbing should be placed on a solid base, either asphalt or concrete. It should not be placed directly on top of dirt.
What should be done about root damage?
If roots are causing the curb to bulge upward, it is necessary to remove the curb, sub-base and the roots. Extruded curbing should not be replaced without removing the roots.
